Spine Surgery, Arthroscopic Surgery, Sports Medicine, General Orthopaedics

Dr. Robert Rovner grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended college and medical school at the University of Maryland from 1971 to 1979. He and his wife relocated to California in 1979 to raise a family (two children), completing an internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California at Irvine from 1979 to 1984. Dr. Rovner then completed a one year fellowship in reconstructive spine surgery at the University of Southern California, Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center from 1984 to 1985, specializing in scoliosis and spinal cord injury. He passed his Orthopaedic Surgery Boards with a 99 percentile national ranking in 1987, and has re-certified in 1997 and 2007. He is also board certified in Spine Surgery by the American Board of Spine Surgeons. He entered private practice in 1985 and has been practicing in the East Bay since that time.

In over twenty years of private practice, Dr. Rovner has performed over four thousand spinal operations involving the
cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine with successful outcomes. These include surgery for degenerative, congenital and
developmental conditions such as scoliosis, disc herniation, and disc degeneration in pediatric and adult patients, with an emphasis on minimal surgery and rapid return to work and function. Despite the volume, "every patient is special to me, and has my undivided attention".

Dr. Rovner is currently a volunteer faculty member at the University of California at Davis Medical School, working as
Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, focusing on pediatric and adult spine surgery. He has in the past volunteered his time in several East Bay CCS clinics, providing consultation and surgery to children with cerebral palsy and other childhood Orthopaedic conditions. He has been invited to speak as a guest lecturer on various topics in spine surgery, and works as a consultant in developing new spinal techniques and implants as well as working for their approval by the FDA. He is a frequent consultant on difficult medical legal spinal surgery cases on a national basis.

Dr. Rovner has special interests in pediatric and adult spinal deformity, spinal microsurgery, and the development of new techniques in minimally invasive reconstructive surgery of the spine. He is proud to be a member of the Webster Spine Institute, a group of fellowship trained physicians within Webster Orthopaedic Medical Group dedicated to treatment of spinal disorders, both surgically and non-operatively. He sees patients in our Oakland and San Ramon offices.
